CONFIDENCE. COURAGE. INSPIRATION

These are three qualities I want to nourish and teach my child(ren).

1) Confidence – To make good choices and learn from a ‘not-so-good-choice.’

2) Courage – To push through fear and overcome it. They will learn that not everything comes easy, but to be resourceful and have the courage to continue.

3) Inspiration – To be encouraged to work through all situations, be motivated and have the reward living a life with purpose.

At this stage in my life, I am ready to be a caring, patient and loving mom that wants nothing more than to add the dimension of motherhood into my life. After turning 40, I am at a place in my life where adoption is the most important choice — surrounding this child with stability, encouragement and love.

Growing Up Adopted

What’s unique about my passion to adopt a child is the fact I am adopted myself. I understand how the child will feel, what questions they may and will ask, but most of all – I will just listen and answer the questions with honesty and love. At the age of 30, I was reunited with my birth family and have a very close relationship with my biological sister and her family – even 10 years later. I love to spend times with her boys, Alex and Ryan whom I met when they were very young.

Adoption in my immediate family includes my sister, and my brother. I am in contact with other half siblings from my birth family who live in Canada. There’s a support system of loving individuals that have been part of the adoption triad. My influence and own story of adoption has given me perspective few others understand. I am able to be forthcoming and share adoption with family and close friends which is so important to this process.

My Life Today

I have a large extension to my immediate family with many friends who are there to support me and my life. They are a great source of strength. I mostly spend vacation time seeing my sister and her two children, along with friends. I like going the beach and to the mountains. I also believe strongly in just getting away for the day. I enjoy trips to the beach or for a long walk at the lake often.

After working for several large companies, I started my own company. I am a successful business owner in marketing and advertising. I am excited to welcome a child into my family and overjoyed to become a mother as soon as possible – this flexibility of my time is important to my new family. I have always known I was adopted as long as I can remember, so I know what growing up adopted is like and how I would plan to communicate with my little addition to the family. These are some of the things I think about when I walk – about being a mom that very much welcomes a child.

I am a doer – a very responsible person, a creative thinker, love to learn new things and I am not set in my ways too much, although I do like a routine. I am a good provider and protective of family and friends.

From my father, an airplane mechanic before he retired a few years ago, I learned about responsibility, and hard work. I also learned about keeping your word and going the extra mile to help someone. Today, I carry a heart for the under-served and always vote for the underdog. Giving back and being a champion for someone else is very motivating to me. I have volunteered as a mentor for the Best Friends program in my county and currently serve on the board for a center that cares for disabled and disadvantaged children, as well as a leadership board for a large non profit organization. From my mom, I learned a commitment to family and taking care of each other.

I enjoy sports – mostly college basketball and football. I am active and spend time each week outdoors and exercising to take care of myself. What’s more is much of my time is spent on my family, taking care of my business, spending time with friends, and reading and writing. I have been diligent in focusing on these areas. I have accomplished much in my life, yet I pray about motherhood with all my heart.

My Childhood

My dad was in the Air Force when he met my mother. He was offered a job with a major airline company, so I grew up in the north with my older brother, who was also adopted. He is three years older than me. We spent a lot of time outside and swimming. I have fond memories of my grandparents when I was young, spending time at the lake house with them on weekends, fishing, and boating. From elementary school through high school, I remember my parents being active and present at school games and science fair competitions, PTA and such….something I plan on doing as a mother as well.

As a child, I enjoyed many indoor and outdoor activities such as riding bikes, playing with our cocker spaniel, Bridgette, taking ballet and tap lessons, and participating in dance recitals. I even played softball on a recreational league as a 6th grader. I am still competitive by nature and like to win. I was also involved in many clubs and activities in high school. As a family, we would play cards and pass the cold winters away with board games around the fireplace.

I have one full biological sister and I love to spend time with her husband and two boys. I also have two biological half siblings who live in Canada. I am very happy to have found my biological siblings and I feel very connected with them, as well with my parents who are now retired.

After graduating from high school, I attended college where I earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and a Minor in Journalism and Marketing. After college, I joined my parents in North Carolina. At the age of 30, I started the journey of finding my birth information and birth siblings. This is still a very special memory for me — so thankful to have found her and my two nephews.

My Home

I live in a family-friendly neighborhood located in a quiet community with lots of playgrounds and it is just minutes from area schools, and medical facilities. My home includes 2 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room, and loft. One of my favorite activities has been designing a beautiful patio off the kitchen that goes to a backyard garden and eating area.

The room I have chosen to be a nursery overlooks the backyard garden. It has a beautiful window with the view of the magnolia tree and the flowers I have planted. I am so excited about creating a peaceful environment with lots of learning opportunities.

One very special member of my household is my cat, Rio. Rio came to me at 6 weeks old and is very sweet. She is just over two years old now. She is a very gentle and friendly kitten, and welcomes all friends and family into my home.

My neighborhood has sidewalks on both sides of the street, has both a kids and adult pool with a large slide. I liked the neighborhood when I moved in 10 years ago because of its diversity. It has young families, singles, couples, folks with teenagers, and retired people of all races. It’s about 20 minutes from my work, making for an easy commute to my office. At the end of my street is a small park; plus there is a greenway system that comes right into the end of the block where there are trails for several miles.

About Adoption

Being adopted myself makes this journey special for me. I understand the many feelings of growing up adopted – from childhood through adulthood. What that means to your child is that I have compassion for the questions that will come, and I will answer each one with patience, honesty and love. Being reunited with my birth siblings is an occasion I will never forget, I am grateful to have this history as part of my family. I will raise each of my children with confidence, encouragement and inspiration. At this time in my life, I am ready to be a caring, patient and loving mom that wants nothing more to add motherhood into my life.
